Kate Duncan Smith DAR School is located in
the Appalachian area of Northeast Alabama, high on Gunter Mountain. The
school is located in the town of Grant in Marshall County. Kate Duncan
Smith DAR school is the only school with grades K-12 in the United States owned
and operated by members of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Alabama
Society DAR established the school in 1924 and named it in honor of Kate Duncan
Smith. The enrollment at Kate Duncan Smith DAR has increased greatly since
1924, but the same dedication to achievement is as strong now as it was in the
early years.
On October 11, 2002 Kate Duncan Smith DAR School was named to the National
Register of Historic Places. All the buildings that were constructed up
until 1962 are included in the registry. The National Register of Historic
Places is an official list of historic buildings and places in the United
States.
